“There is more happiness in giving than in receiving”
Philanthropy is an elegant term to explain a form of altruism or unselfishness that consists of personal initiatives for the public good focusing on improving the quality of life for other people.
A philanthropist is a person who seeks to promote the welfare of others. It is someone who donates substantial resources, including time, expertise and money to good causes.
In modern society, philanthropy can be associated with famous people such as singers, actors, athletes and to rich people such as Bill Gates who donate generous amount of money to charity and good causes. Activities carried out by celebrities and well-know people to help others are often publicised by the media on a regular basis. People admire their generosity and commitment to help others.
However, we do not need to be famous or rich to donate what we can afford and help others. If you have supported a fundraiser at work, school or local community, if you have donated money or any sort of goods to others, if you have done voluntary work in your local church or in the community, if you have taken part in a campaign to improve others’ life, if you have helped your neighbour to look after their children or accompanied somebody for a medical appointment, then you have been a philanthropist.
Helping others is always gratifying. The United States leads the world ranking of donations, followed by the European Union. In Europe the most generous countries are Italy, United Kingdom and Germany. In some countries, donating to charities can help doners with tax reduction. Giving to charities can help to build goodwill and positive relationships with others. By donating you show that you care about others, and you are committed to improve the quality of life of those in need.

- Helping others is rewarding. Here is a list of activities that can be done to make an impact on your local community and help others in need.
- Give blood if you are able to. This saves lives.
- Check on neighbours and family members. This can be done by visiting them or by giving them a phone call. This will help others to avoid loneliness and feel appreciated.
- Take care of yourself and others by being patient and kind. You can also encourage others to do the same.
- Stay informed and calm. Only share information from reliable sources. When you stay calm, others will follow you and this creates a nice atmosphere to stay in.
- Donate food, clothes and items that you do not use to charities or people that you know. You can make space in your house and help others at the same time. You can also sell or donate unwanted gifts.
- Visit an ill person at home or at hospital and give them your time and company.
- Volunteer in a soup kitchen or a charity organisation.
- Teach somebody to play an instrument, to learn a new language or to develop a new skill.
- Donate some money to a charity or to a friend in need.
- Hold a fancy-dress day and charge your friends to get involved and donate what you collect.
Several studies have shown that acts of kindness are linked to increased feelings of happiness, health and sense of well-being. Helping others makes the world a better place for everyone. One should also remember that charity begins at home hence we are first responsible for the needs of our own family and close friends.
People who do voluntary work and help others can be more confident and have a higher self-esteem. We can always donate something; we always have at home something that we do not need but that can be useful for others. If we do not have resources, we can also donate time and kindness which is free!
