Dancing is a flexible activity, as it can be practiced individually or in groups. Moreover, it can take place at home or in more formal settings, such as in a club or during a party.
Historical Approach
The history of dance dates back to prehistoric times, as shown by the Bhimbetka rock paintings in India. Since its origins, it has been a form of expression tied to art, religion, and social life across various cultures. In Asia, texts such as the Natya Shastra established classical Indian dance, while in China, ritual and court dances emerged, reaching their height during the Tang dynasty.
In Europe, dance evolved from Renaissance court dances to the professional ballet of the 17th century, later transforming with Romanticism and giving rise, in the 20th century, to contemporary dance.
In the Americas, and specially in Latin America, dance reflects the fusion of Indigenous, African, and European roots, which gave rise to a vast diversity of styles and rhythms. Manifestations such as Argentine tango, Brazilian samba, and Caribbean salsa show how dance became a form of cultural identity, popular expression, and a symbol of mestizaje, where history, emotion, and community converge.
